News.com.au reports on a man who walked away from a share of 17.5 billion dollars; his name, Joe Green, and all because his dad told him ¡°no¡±.
So what exactly was it that Green walked away from that was worth 17.5 billion dollars? A share of Mark Zuckerberg¡¯s Facebook empire. Green was Zuckerberg¡¯s former Harvard roommate and during the early development the social network, Zuckerberg offered Green an integral position in Facebook¡¯s development. Regrettably Green turned it down.
Unfortunately, at the time, what Zuckerberg asked of Green seemed to be too much to pay. He asked Green to drop out of the Ivy League university in order to build the social networking site with him. Zuckerberg planned for the site to hit nation with a bang, however when this all started, Zuckerberg¡¯s vision appeared to be much too farfetched. As a result, Green¡¯s father disapproved of the pursuit and Green turned down Zuckerberg¡¯s offer.
?After all, at the time what parent would approve of their son dropping out of an Ivy League school to pursue a founding a mere website? Had they only known what they know now.
Green, however, holds no grudges against his father and he still remains very close friends with Zuckerberg. And of course, a person does not walk out of an Ivy League school with nothing. Green went on to pursue his love of politics and 2007 found him working with his former roommate again on the Facebook application ¡°Causes¡±, which allows friends to suggest charities, social causes and political candidates to their followers. It is a form of marketing. The app works with political candidates and such and helps them connect to people at a more ¡®personal¡¯ level.
Green believes that social networking is becoming a powerful tool in the fields of politics and activism. Causes has 6.5 million active uses monthly and has raised 47 million dollars for 50 000 charities.
